Potlucks and SRM Day
Prior to COVID-19 times, SRM Indian Education hosted monthly family potlucks. Together with Mrs. Joann Henry (Isleta/San Felipe Pueblos) and Ms. Marietta Marmon (Laguna Pueblo), we enjoyed building relationships, sharing a great meal with each other, and planning our annual celebration of our school’s namesake, Mrs. Susie Rayos Marmon.
Mrs. Marmon was a cutting-edge educator and elder from Laguna Pueblo. We honor her through an annual school-wide celebration in April. In the past years, we have had events such as a children’s exhibition powwow, a traditional Native American storyteller, Native American student performances, a Pueblo Throw, food and arts/crafts vendors, and much much more. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and to keep everyone safe, we are looking at how we can do monthly family get-togethers and SRM Day virtually. I will send out more information as plans are made. Everyone is invited to participate in our potlucks and preparation for SRM Day.
Indian Education Program at SRM
SRM is fortunate to be one of the few APS elementary schools to offer an Indian Education Program for Native American children in kindergarten to 5th grades. This semester, I’m teaching all classes live online through google meet.
The SRM Indian Education Program works in two major ways.
- One day a week on Fridays, I teach Native American Children’s Literature to all of our Native American students.
- The other four days a week, Monday-Thursday, I work with small groups of Native American children who need support with English language arts. I use the children’s reading scores to determine who qualifies for these classes. If the student is below grade level in reading, and does not receive special education services, I will work with this child. Our goal is for each child to be at or above grade level in reading.
I’ve already begun classes for 1st -5th graders. I will begin classes with kindergarteners in January.
To qualify to participate in either of these classes, SRM Native American students must have submitted a completed Federal 506 form to document Federally recognized tribal affiliation. Parents/guardians only need to complete a 506 form once for your child. If we do not have a form on file for your child, I will be contacting you individually. Thank you to those who have already completed this form.
