Principal's message

Welcome Mrs. Cordero - SRM new interin principal

Hello Susie Rayos Marmon Staff,

It is with great pleasure and a humble heart I will be joining the S.R. Marmon team.

My name is Maria Cordero and I am currently transitioning from the Assistant Principal at Truman Middle School to the Interim Principal at S.R. Marmon Elementary School. My educational career started in 2003 as an Educational Assistant at Painted Sky Elementary. I was at Painted Sky for almost two years. I then proceeded to pursue my degree in education full time. After I obtained my degree from UNM I moved to Tempe, AZ . In Arizona is where I spent my first two years of teaching. It was a great experience to live outside of my hometown of Albuquerque, however Albuquerque is my home which brought me back. Upon my return I started teaching at Truman, where I taught 6th and 8th grade ELA/ELD from 2007 to 2014. In 2014 I decided it was time to utilize my administrative license and pursued an administration position. I was hired at Garfield and Kennedy Middle Schools as a .5 administrator at each location. This was challenging, but a great learning experience. The following year a Curriculum Assistant Principal position opened at Truman Middle School.  I was fortunate to be selected and able to return and support one location. In the Fall of 2018 I took some time off to care for my father. I returned to APS Fall of 2019. and decided to go back into the classroom to regain experience from a teachers perspective and taught Kindergarten at Lavaland Elementary School. This was an eye-opening experience that I think all administrators should do from time-to-time. As we all know APS is ever evolving and partially through the year I was offered my administration position back at Truman, which I took. Now I am eager to start the 2020 school year with all of you.

On a personal note, I am lucky enough to be married to an amazing man. I have one son who is married and the two of them have given me two amazing grandsons. Family is a very important part of my life. I like to run to clear my head and keep healthy, although I will be the first to admit I'm a work in progress there when it comes to hitting my running goals.

I look forward to getting to know you all personally and working together to have a great year together.

Maria Cordero, MA
